The story of Studley Royal

Deer have roamed Studley Royal since the late Middle Ages, when the park was a hunting ground. The stone bridges came centuries later. In the 1700s, John Aislabie laid out the formal water garden. His son William shaped a wilder stretch of the River Skell, where the path crosses and recrosses the water. That is the landscape you walk through in Seven Bridges Valley.

On your return along Lime Avenue, look along the line of trees. St Mary’s Church stands at one end of a view that stretches all the way to Ripon Cathedral. The church is younger than the avenue. Designed by William Burges and completed in 1878, it was commissioned by the Marquess and Marchioness of Ripon in memory of the Marchioness’s brother, Frederick Vyner.
