Booked the baths for two o’clock? You’ve still got a morning in Yorkshire. For a Harrogate spa weekend without a car, our pick is a wander from the Royal Pump Room into Valley Gardens, with lunch back in town. If you have a car and a morning to spare, swap the gardens for one of the circular walks Jo and I have filmed.
A spa day on foot: the Turkish Baths and Valley Gardens
Start outside the Turkish Baths on Parliament Street and head along Crescent Road to the Royal Pump Room Museum. The main entrance to Valley Gardens is opposite the museum. Go through the gates and follow the promenade towards the Sun Pavilion. Turn back whenever you like and return through the same gates; the Montpellier Quarter is handy for lunch before you walk back to the baths.
Set aside about an hour for a leisurely outing, longer if you want to stop for coffee. The beauty of this little out-and-back is that you can shorten it on the day. Allow time to change and check the arrival instructions on your booking.
There’s a reason this walk and the baths belong together. Visitors once walked these gardens between visits to the mineral springs. The Royal Baths opened in 1897; today the Turkish Baths still have a sequence of increasingly hot rooms and a plunge pool. Check Turkish Baths sessions and prices.
The Harrogate Spa at the Majestic: a town weekend
Choose the Majestic if you want a hotel spa and a morning on foot. Make your way to the Royal Pump Room and pick up the gardens stroll above. If Saturday is your spa day and you have a car on Sunday, save our four-mile Studley Royal Deer Park walk for the journey home: St Mary’s Church, the lake and the stone bridges give the day a very different feel.

Rudding Park: a countryside walk and a rooftop spa
Rudding Park is in Follifoot, outside the town centre. For a day by car, pair an afternoon spa booking with our three-mile Stainburn Forest walk. Start at the forest car park and follow the woodland circuit, then change out of your walking boots before driving to the spa. The Smiths Arms is our food stop for this walk if lunch isn’t part of your booking.
If you’d prefer water views and a longer morning out, choose our 4.65-mile Lindley Wood Reservoir circular instead. Allow 1½ to 2¼ hours for the walk itself, plus time for the drive and lunch. The Timble Inn is a short drive from the route.

Make the weekend work for you
Arriving by train? Keep the spa and stroll in central Harrogate. Driving? Open the walk guide first: it has the actual parking location, distance and terrain. If your spa session starts early, enjoy the walk the following morning instead of watching the clock.
A gentle stroll is plenty if you just want fresh air. If you prefer a brisker pace, regular brisk walking can help build stamina and support heart health. Read the NHS guide to walking for health.
